Asparagales

Classification: Order
Synonyms / homonyms: asparagales , Iridales
Common names: asparagoid lilies
The largest order of monocots. Previously these were often placed under Lilales but with new classification systems this group is now divided into three orders - Liliales, Asparagales and Dioscoreales. It's an amazing thought that this order would have diverged from other monocots over 120-130 million years ago. Common species are onlion, galic, leeks, sparagus and vanilla. Day lilies, lily of the Valley and the ever popular and often seen in my country New Zealand Agapanthus. Also some of those beautiful spring flowers, freesia and gladiolus and iris. The order is often found to have a cluster of leaves at the base or end of a woody like stem.
